Redistricting affects the South Asian Community. Redistricting is dividing up a jurisdiction (like a state, county, or city) into districts for the purpose of electing representatives. Where and how the lines are drawn influences everything from who is likely to be elected to how resources get allocated. And when it comes to democratic representation, communities matter. If our community is split up into different small pieces every ten years, it makes it harder to have a voice in government. We have several congressional districts across Texas that have between 10,000 to 50,000 Desis in each district. These districts are likely to be targeted, to dilute our vote. We need representatives from our community to help draw maps. This means helping to identify important community gathering places in your district. Examples include places of worship, grocery stores, dance studios, community halls etc.. We need representation from all religious groups, cultural groups, leaders in community groups, and citizens. We would like representatives from all groups within the South Asian umbrella. Please sign up - its critical to keep our voice We are doing this in partnership with AALDEF The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, a national organization founded in 1974, protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans.
